Drivers Training School

Graduated Driver Licensing Summary

SEGMENT 1

FACTS TO KNOW

SEGMENT 2

Driving Right Training School offers Segment 1 and Segment 2 driver education classes and the driving test (road test).

SEGMENT 1

Students need to be 14 years 8 months of age or older on the first day of class to take Segment 1. Segment 1 consists of 24 hours of classroom instruction plus 6, one hour driving lessons with a driving instructor, and 4 hours of observation while another student is driving.

Completion Segment 1 of Driver Education:

Dear Parents/Guardians:
Although your son/daughter has completed Segment 1 of driver education, this does not mean he/she has mastered the skills involved in the driving task. Your teen has demonstrated competency in: basic understanding of traffic laws and rules of the road, basic judgment and decision-making skills, and basic vehicle control and manipulative skills. Your teen will need to continue to drive with you to become more skilled and experienced. The following is a list of suggestions you may wish to consider in practice driving with your teen:

• Provide regular driving practice. Log all driving time.  Be instructive and positive.
• Begin with low-challenging drives. Avoid heavily congested areas.  Drive slower than the posted speed limit and increase your following distance.
• Have your teen verbalize/rehearse driving maneuvers to you before performing them so you will know their actions ahead of time.
• Limit distractions in the car so your teen can concentrate on driving.

**The green certificate your teen received for successful completion of Segment 1 is not a license to drive. To obtain a Level 1 License, a parent must accompany their teen to the Secretary of State office with the green Segment 1 certificate, an original birth certificate (one with a raised seal) verifying your son or daughter is 14 years 9 months old, their social security card, provide identity verification and proof of Michigan residency. Please refer to www.michigan.gov/sos (Driver's License and State ID, Teen Drivers).

After your teen has driven on their Level 1 License for at least 90 days and obtained 30 hours of driving, two of which are at night, your teen may take Segment 2 driver education classes.
